| | | Panaeolus sp for ID please NT Longshaw 18 October 2009
Found in sheep grazed meadow during a waxcap foray with FungiJohn.
I read a description for P. ater which seemed close. Your advice please.
Les
ps John's too occupied with his new mscope this week.

hi Les
for what it's worth I don't think it's ater - now synonymised with P. fimicola, I think - based on cap shape - that it could well be what I would have called P. rickenii for many years, but which has now been synonymised with P. acuminatus
however the proviso above still obtains . . . .
cheers
Chris PS - out of interest I have just done a quick Google image search for " rickenii" - boy are there some dodgy ID's out there - a timely reminder that trawling the web looking at pictures can be a very unhelpful activity . . . (not that I'm suggesting that's what you have done!)

| | | Re: Panaeolus sp for ID please I'd agree with Chris, probably P acuminatus. They are ones I'm beginning to recognise in the field, but still take home to check to be sure. They have nice fat spores, flattened when seen from the side. And you'll see them contaminating many of my recent micro photos .

Luckily no-one has called my bluff yet. |

| | | Re: Panaeolus sp for ID please Many thanks for your replies Chris, Melanie and mwnn.
Hopefully John will have a sample, as he always goes home with a full box.
I'm watching with interest the results of him testing out his scope with various specimens, and learning quite a bit in the process.
