a bit of a wild stab, but it could be a Hebeloma in the mesophaeum area . . . .
that is (definitely!) not an I/D
cheers
Chris

Definitely Hebeloma and the dark centre to the cap does bring H. mesophaeum to mind. Unfortunately, I can't make out from the photo whether there are the remnants of a partial veil or not. Without that it's not possible to narrow it down any further.
Edit: changed my mind. There are traces of veil around the edge of the cap visible in the photo top left. So H. mesophaeum area is right and there is a good chance it is that species. But that's as far as I can go.

| | | Re: id? on the young specimen which i found before the first photo was taken there was indeed a partial veil. i haven't done a spore print though, as i like the way it grows next to my tree and didnt really want to get rid of it! cheers for the info though guys, from looking in the Phillips book, Hebeloma looked promising, but i haven't any previous experience with these so had no idea. |

just place a piece of white card under one side of the fungus (supported, to raise it to gill level, as you see fit) and there you go . . .
best
Chris
