| | A couple for ID please Coprinus? These were found on a fallen beech ..
Possibly Coprinus silvaticus it seems to match the picture in my newly acquired Phillips Mushrooms.
These were a lot smaller - the single one being about 15mm high. Similar in shape to the above but different in colour - growing about a metre apart from the above.
Many thanks, JohnB

JohnB | the two are very similar - best distinguished on spore shape
the problem is that the Roger Phillips book - good though it is - shows around 16 species of Coprinus in its broad sense . . . unfortunately there are another hundred or more British species which are not included in that book
and the "info" you need is scattered all over the place - the Kees Ulje site is a very good start - Coprinus (Studies in Coprinus - keys to subsections and species in Coprinus) . . . although to hijack Bette Davis' comments re old age: Coprinus "is no place for sissies" . . .
Chris

Chris | Thanks Chris - don't think I'm ready for microscopy yet.
