| | | Interesting fungi for I.D Not sure what this fungi is but it was a pretty one.....
This i think is Amanita Citrina var. Alba
Now this is an interesting one. It was growing all over the forest floor and was mainly found in the grassy parts, it was very difficult to walk and not step over one or more of these as it was everywhere. They grew on there own and in clumps. The more i look at it the more i'm inclined to think some kind of honey fungus... but it grew from the soil not wood.
And finally the name of this puff ball escapes me... |

the first fungus is prob. what you think
the "honey fungus?" is indeed an Armillaria . . . . they don't always fruit directly on wood by any means
the puffball fungus is Lycoperdon perlatum
cheers
Chris

Chris | Thanks for the confirmation on the honey fungus... but i have absolutely no idea what the first fungus is... is this a honey fungus too?? If it is then i did not realize that honey fungus can have spikey bristly caps too.
Cheers for the Puffball |

. . . . | "honey fungus" is actually a species-complex of several closely-related fungi, so there is quite a lot of variation: cobwebby or more substantial veil / ring, colours etc . . .
cheers
Chris

Chris | Oh dear.. the woods that i were in today are in big truble!! The two lots of honey fungus where found half a mile apart, and like i said this fungi was everywhere... it was the most dominant fungi... infact pretty much the only fungi about. Apart from the Citrina and puffball the only other note-worthy fungi was was a pair of A.Muscarias. |

| | | Re: Interesting fungi for I.D It's not as bad as you think, Honey Fungus in woods is all part of the ecosystem and is just recycling at work.
But if it is a small wood with young trees planted, that may well be problematic.

| | | Re: Interesting fungi for I.D Once you have your eye in, it is quite easy to recognise Honey Fungus, but less easy to separate the species.
It would be interesting to know if anyone is keeping track of where they are appearing in Britain and if there is any relation to the drought, but it seems they are coming up everywhere, and this year is a 'good' year for them.

Yes I think it is, last weekend I went to Westonbirt Arb. and it was covered in them and the previous day in a Wye forestry they were also in abundance, plus today in Gwent they were also in evidence ... maybe not exactly the same species but to my untutored eye they looked the same..
These were in Wye, are they a honey fungus too? |

Neil. | What drought ??
We've had the soggiest summer I can remember over here Neil (and for a hilltop in mid-Wales that's saying something) but the HF are everywhere in huge numbers.
