| | | Edibility of Hygrophoropsis aurantiaca? Hi
I am finding conflicting information regarding the edibility of Hygrophoropsis aurantiaca (false chanterelle). I find lots of these and always thought they were inedible, but I've recently found sources claiming that "people have eaten them with no ill-effect" and some other sources claiming that they are hallucinogenic.
Anyone know the correct edibility status for this species?

David | For the same reason that I know plenty of people who will happily eat Amanita muscaria. I've never been brave enough, personally. |

| | | Re: Edibility of Hygrophoropsis aurantiaca? I wasn't aware of it's hallucinatory properties which are no where near as well documented in the popular references as the the 'gastroenteritic' possibilities - either way I for one will not be tempted to sample any. |

I've just looked up Hydrophorosis aurantiaca in 4 different field guides and 1 says that it is edible, the other 3 say that whilst not particularly poisonous, can cause stomach upset and are flaccid and tasteless anyway so not really worth eating. As for their supposed hallucinatory properties there is no mention at all. |

| | | Re: Edibility of Hygrophoropsis aurantiaca? I always believed that it was psychoactive and I am sure I read this in one of my books at home. I will check which one when I get back from work.

| | | Re: Edibility of Hygrophoropsis aurantiaca? I would agree with you, the fact that something is edible doesn't make it good to eat. Quoting me out of context like that made it look as if it was my opinion. I was however, merely pointing out that Blacks nature guide states that False chanterelles are edible with no mention of any unpleasant side effects. |

sorry to have offended
