| | | Gymnopilus ? Hi
I found a massive fruiting of these on a pile of rotting logs today, the photo shows one of half a dozen or more similar sized clumps.
I think they are Gymnopilus junonius but would appreciate confirmation. I have kept a specimen it more detail is required.

| | | Re: Gymnopilus ? Taking a spore print from a specimen can save a lot of headaches. Gymnopilus would have a rusty brown spore print... whereas Armillaria would have a white spore print.
Guess what colour your specimens would have had. Perhaps they should have called honey fungus the deceiver because it certain comes in lots of guises. Your specimens are Armillaria sp. |

| | | Re: Gymnopilus ? Thanks again,
I'd never encountered A. gallica and, probably due to the attention given to the damage caused by A. mellea, hadn't realised that a lot of HF is saprophytic rather than parasitic. This caused me to discount Armillaria because these clumps were confined to the piles of old logs . I also blame the ring being much flimsier than I would associate with HF and the reddish colour to the tops of the stipe for my mistake (and I can probably think up some more excuses given time )
The spore print was whitish as predicted (should have wited till this morning before posting, I'd have worked out that it couldn't be Gymnopilus for myself )
Regards
Steve
ps. how about an ID for the white cap below left of centre in the pic
