Cultivating fungi

Has anyone tried this? Mushroom kits are fairly popular, but a DIY approach is more interesting. Anyone successfully managed to 'seed' mushrooms in their gardens?

I have thrown loads out over the years but all the one's that appear are grass/lawn growing species that arrive under their own steam which gives me a thrill when I'm hanging the washing out!

I am seriously thinking about arming myself with a beech 'log' and buying a Hericeum 'plug' - the problem being getting the 'log' (read half a tree!) back home .......... Unless someone has and is willing to share a Hericeum for photography purposes within travelling distance ....... (time we had a fingers crossed icon methinks!!!)
