| | | Is this a bay bolete? I'm new to fungi, learning slowly, and think this might be a bay bolete. Am I right?
It was a chunky fungus growing on a bank under oak and beech trees, with a warm-brown, suede-like cap and a thick creamy-buff stipe with a pinkish tinge, and the lemon-yellow flesh discoloured strongly, turning blue-green.
Unfortunately it was a pretty old and ripe specimen, and I think this accounts for the unusual brown colour of the cap underside. |

| | | Re: Is this a bay bolete? No this is not a bay bolete. Bay boletes do not have red pores or red stem. It is probably a scarletina bolete (boletus luridiformis). |

I appreciate that this isn't the ideal way to ID fungi, but I'm still learning. |

give me a break - I'm still learning too! The only way I'll get better is by joining in these discussions - if you want to criticise me make it constructive. |

| | | Re: Is this a bay bolete? A quick scan through the Boletus section of any fungi book will make it evident there are quite a few of these species which turn blue after the flesh/pores are bruised or exposed.
Nobody is trying to criticise you.
And enjoy your stay on the fungi forum.
