| | | Omphalina like species for ID When I first spotted this growing amongst various acid grasses ( Deschampsia flexuosa, Molinea and Eriophorum vaginatum) I thought it was a Lichenomphila species but the habitat and colouration doesn't seem to match any of those keyed out in my books, could it be a Rickenella or something completely different?

This looks more ' Hygrocybe like' than Rickenella.
I'm tempted to say it could be an aberration, but I seem to recall seeing a similar photo in another book yonks ago, and just cannot place it.
What a lovely fungus though.

Check out Hygrocybe vitellina. The bright yellow washes out of the top of the cap very readily, just as yours show. Damp, boggy ground is where it likes to be, and judging by the presence of Cotton Grass, the habitat looks right.

Melanie | Many thanks Melanie.
That seems like a very good fit from what I've got on it so far - if it is I wish I'd seen it before the yellow had washed out, would have been spectacular I think.

oh I wish it was Mediterranean spring and I was in Crete, or the Ionians or Epirus or the Peloponnese or . . . .
(sigh)
this'll get Ditiola going I suspect

C | Yes I can see where you're coming from with that - and the idea of a Mediterranean spring sounds very attractive knowing what a Dales winter is likely to bring!
