Cortinarius ID please

Hi all

I saw these at the weekend, lots were growing over quite a wide area in which I think there was plenty of buried wood, so on first inspection I had them down as a Armillaria species. But then I noticed the web between the stem and the cap, so are these a Cortinarius species and if is it possible to say which one?

if you do a spore print you can answer your own question - you will get a very pale one - Cortinarius will give you a rusty brown one and the gills would colour up accordingly . . .

quite a number of fungus genera can have a veil covering the developing gills - think shop-bought "mushrooms" - and in a proportion of those the veil will appear cob-webby

in addition Cortinarius is a mycorrhizal genus not a wood-rotting one (though sometimes mycorrhizal fungi may appear to be growing from wood)

you have an Armillaria there - right first time
