. I haven't a clue what it is though . What was on the underside? Gills, pores?

There is an edible mushroom called the "penny bun"... which looks like a glazed bread roll... THIS ISN'T IT.

All you will get with this is wild guesses.
Next time you see anything as distorted as this, always include a shot so that we can see if there are pores or gills underneath and preferably how they are attached to the stem, or alternatively, cut it in half and take another photo of the cut face.

Even if this was in perfect condition, I believe we would still be struggling to find an ID without an additional photo.
