| | | A few Boletes Found 2 days ago.
First, the Brothel Creeper Bolete, Porphyrellus porphyrosporus, under oak. Well I presume that is what it is, but it didn't stain blue at all, but slowly brown then black. Also no unpleasant smell or taste. Balloon like cells from the pore squash Lance shaped cystidia from the pore squash Pileipellis cells Spores Caulocystidia
Spore size (14.4) 16.8-20.8 (22.8) x (5.2) 5.3-5.8 (6.0) um Q av 3.4
FOS does mention P pseudoscaber under conifers that stains reddish brown, which some treat as a separate species. Though there are no conifers in this wood, except yew, but they were too far away for this specimen.
Then elsewhere, all the following under the same birch tree. Leccinum scabrum. Big leathery jobs, and the spore size checked out right (this was the same spot where I found a Leccinum scabrum with unusually small spores), so I'm routinely checking them.
Spore size (13.5) 15.5-18.4 (19.6) x (5) 5.4-6.2 (6.5)um for one,
(16.3) 16.7-18.7 (19.8) x (4.5) 5.1-5.7 (5.9)um for t'other. Leccinum versipelle, I presume, though the caulocystidia weren't encrusted or obviously thick walled. Stained pinkish which gradually turned grey then black. Cheilocystidia Spores Stipipellis Pileipellis
Spore size (11.7) 13.1-16.1 (18.6) x (3.5) 4-4.9 (5.2)um Q
to be continued .... |

| | | Re: A few Boletes Then this one confused me .... Like a small L scabrum, there were 5 of these, all the far side of the tree. Cap was much softer than the L scabrum. These stained turquoise in the stem. And the spore sizes of the 2 specimes I checked were larger than L scabrum. Also the micro details were somewhat different from those I have stored of previous L scabrum from the same location, the cystidia, caulocystidia with much longer narrowed ends. I only took a small section of the caps, nothing of the stipe from the L scabrum that was there, so haven't checked the caulocystidia from the latest typical L scabrum. I'll probably go back out there this afternoon to get a sample though, if the squirrels haven't been peckish in the meantime. spores Cheilocystidia Caulocystidia Pileipellis
Spore size (19.5) 20.7-23 (24.2) x (5) 5.3-6 (6.6) um, Qav 3.9.
As you can see, the spores are large for L scabrum but I'm not sure what else it might be.
Comments please ....

Just to keep you happy
I would agree with your first three
The last one is a bit of a mystery The Leccinums that stains blue are L variicolor L cyaneobasileucum and L brunneogriseolum (the last two thought by some to be the same but in wet/dry sites. The staining in the stipe in all these tends to be confined to the base or at least includes the base The cap in variicolor is normally a more mottled black colour. So all I can say is I would agree with your first three

Mal | Thanks Mal. I'm happy again , well almost (by the way, do you know anything about Hygrocybe look-alikes as well?).
So just the last Leccinum still to crack .... well life wouldn't be so fun if it was easy all the time . A funny site where these all come from, though, with one L scabrum with spores significantly smaller than any Leccinum species, and this one that has spores somewhat larger than the Leccinum species listed in Funga Nordica. And all under one single birch tree.

Steve | Hi Steve
I found one a few weeks earlier under the same oak, and that one didn't appear to stain. Or maybe I just didn't wait long enough. This one stained brown quite slowly, but not a hint of blue.
