I saw this in our garden underneath a beech hedge and wondered what it was. Nothing like our usual fungi. The slug gives an idea of size (quite large). Thanks!

I would have thought with gills like that and a tough slender stem, you have Xerula radicata. Is it coming from the wood? Would be a clincher.

Hard to tell. The lower part of the stem abuts the truck of the beech and disappears underground. There's no gap worth mentioning between the stem and the trunk, so yes on balance it is almost certainly attached.

If you really want to know you need to dig it up carefully. If it is as Nick suggests X radicata it will have a long tap root.
