| | | Scutellinia olivascens? Found today growing on moss covered rotting log.
Because of size, about 15mm across, initially thought it might be something like Neottiella rutilans. On close examination was surprised to discover it was a large Eyelash fungus.
This is much bigger than any Scutellinia scutellata I've ever seen. (There were some further along on the same log, but only about 1/3 the size of this).
From what information I've been able to find, Scutellinia olivascens seems to fit size wise, and having the very short marginal hairs. (But I don't know if any of the other Scutellinia found in Britain might also be macroscopically similar.
Any thoughts on ID will be much appreciated.
Regards,
Mike. |

I think Scutellinia olivascens can have marginal hairs over 1mm long so doubt this is that species . . . . but still probably something interesting . . .
did you collect it?

| | | Re: Scutellinia olivascens? Hi Chris,
I didn't collect it yesterday, but I've been back to the same site today.
It was easy enough to find the specimen again, as it was immediately beside a board walk.
But overnight, something appears to have made a meal out of most of it - I've drawn red lines on yesterday's photo, to give you an idea of what's left. (Only the bit inside the red lines is left).
I've collected the bit that is left, (currently drying off), just in case there would be enough for you to work with. If you want me to send it across, I'll need a PM or e-mail with an address.
Regards,
Mike. |
