| | | Possible Pholiota. Hi all,
I found a number of these growing along a decaying fallen conifer trunk in a local plantation.
Cap diameter 40-50mm, stipe up to 100mm. No particular smell except mushroom. No colour change when damaged
The closest I can get is P. flammans, any suggestions.
Regards

| | | Re: Possible Pholiota. Hi Steve. Yes you are correct with Pholiota flammans. Typical on dead conifer.

Phillips describes it as rare outside Scotland Highlands (or something to that effect) which made me a bit cautious.

Steve | I think this has probably been under recorded and over looked south of the border Steve. I have found this in all conifer areas I record.

| | | Re: Possible Pholiota. These were a bit past "mint" but the colour really stood out in a dark plantation. First time I've come across them so still a nice find regardless of scarcity.
I wonder if, in the days before large scale conifer plantations in southern Britain, they were far less frequent outside of the Caledonian pinewoods.

Nick | I'll second that.
I've found it at three Lancashire sites recently, so under recording is probably more likely than rarity. But it is a striking fungus, and very photogenic.
