I picked this bumper crop which was growing on grassland beneath silver birch trees. I think they are brown birch bolete but could be cep. Can any one confirm ID?

Hello Al.

Thats a big haul of Leccium scarbrum or brown birch bolete if you prefer. So you were certainly drawing the correct conclusions. The easiest Key indicator to spot a mile off are the blackened fibre tips on the stem you will almost always see it evident as you walk up to the mushrooms. Always a pleasure to find these around a birch. If you were hoping to try them, don't they are well past edible.

Try taking some spore prints and cut one and bruise the stem/pores to see the colour change.

I guess with your WAB pseudonym (porcini) you really ought to get to know your ceps.

You were right with your first suggestion that these are brown birch boletes, Leccinum scabrum or something similar. Ceps look quite different, once you get your eye in.
