I just learned there is rare variety Flammulina fennae, appearing in summer. It looks paler as velutipes as yours do.

maybe Andrew's ones were "late" velutipes, but the white gills of Mal's specimen are pointing to F. fennae. Very rare in Germany, only a few sites known. Should be worth to verifie by microscope.

| | | Re: Winter is comming Thanks for the input folks. The photo is pretty accurate and the gills were certainly very pale but the caps themselves were a nice bright orange. The spore sizes were all over the place mostly with a Q of well under 2. As for sorting out if "the subcutis had sparse scarcely branched ixohyphidia among the dermatocystidia" as against "multiply branched in part moniliform ixohyphidia"
Overall I think that as it was growing on a fallen log not buried wood and the cap colour was darker than it should be for F fennae I will just go with velutipes.
