| | | One for ID please... Went for a walk in Havant, Hampshire, today and spotted this one which I've never seen before and isn't in my book...
About 15cm tall, the pair in the first pic were growing on the ground at the side of the path and surrounded by brambles and nettles. A few metres further on there were lots growing in groups where some wood/bark chippings had been put down.
What caught my eye the most was that the cap appeared to be on upside down. It was funnel shaped and I could see the gills from above, although when I looked underneath the gills were even more prominent and edged with black.
Here are some young ones just emerging...
It was very different from anything I've seen before but I'm sure you guys will know what it is!

| | | Re: One for ID please... Well it's one of the genus originally tagged Coprinus which has now split into multiple genera and subgenera, to confuse things
I'm my opinion, yours is either Coprinopsis lagopus or Coprinus lagopides- we did see them at Clumber, but you must've been busy, hmm...dunno, maybe photographing Fly Agarics perchance?
Here's one growing from woodchip in Lime Tree Ave;
Geeez, I'm shattered- Just driven home from South Devon...left at 4 Traffic was MENTAL!

| | | Re: One for ID please... Thanks guys! After a bit of Googling I think Nick's hit it with the Hare's Foot Inkcap, Coprinopsis lagopus. I certainly didn't photograph it at Clumber last year so I'll have to make up for it this year! Quote:

I'd go for Coprinus lagopus as well. Seems to be its season (we had this one before).
