| | | Poor day exept.... Went for a quick look round Castle Howard today, gardens (not the arboretum) and there is so little about Calyptella capula and a few Mycena but just before I left I spotted a bracket 10' up an ancient oak c600 years old. I am sure it is Piptoporus quercinus. My camera is caput but I have organized photos so will post them as soon as.

All I can say really is that this bracket looks like I would expect an Oak Poly to look like at the end of the season if it had stayed attached to the wood as yours has. (beginning to mummify)
If you are convinced the Oak is over 250 years old, there is every chance this is the real thing, but I would take off a very tiny piece to check under the scope and to look for hyphal clamps - Oak Poly has plenty, (Chicken ot Woods, none) and if any spores remain they should be 6-8 x 2.5-3.5µ.
Good luck, Neil. |

I was told by the foresty manager the tree has been dated and is over 600 years old . I will check for clamps.
Thanks

seriously - nice one Mal! while it has quite a few records further south - it's clearly very rare in Yorkshire - British Fungi - record details
I think Melanie's Dermoloma magicum http://www.fieldmycology.net/FRDBI/F...intGBNum=38676 deserves a shout also - I was with her when we found it in a different area of her patch on Monday - see separate thread; in the same area I found something which doesn't yet appear on the BMS database at all . . . but as it was very small I daresay that " in terms of importance anyways!" it doesn't merit a look-in
cheers
Chris

Chris | Post it on the 'fungus of the day' thread, or 'parasite' thread .... you've got us intrigued ....
Oh, and as I remember I'd walked past the Dermoloma thinking it was a bit of old dung, you were the one to spot it .....
