Today was the first day with some sun and no rain for what seems like ages, so I actually dared take my camera out with me and got quite a few fungus pictures. I'll start with two groups of fungi I'd like to know more about.
The first is a cluster of boletes the like of which I have never encountered before. The whole cluster is only about 10 cm across. I've been looking at it for several days, and at this point I don't think it's getting any larger. They are in a disturbed area in spruce woods just below a developed path. The immediate area produced bay boletes early in the season, followed by amanitas, but is now bare except for these.
So, just what bolete is this, and is it normal for it to form a cluster like this??
The second is a group of white fungi with some special characteristics. I've only found it in two places, and both times it forms a small cluster. The one I haven't pictured (because it was in deep shade and my shot was blurry) seems to be formed in a ring. I saw both groups in the same places last year. They are extremely long lived, lasting a good 3 or four weeks before finally fading. They appear in needle litter in spruce woods, well into the trees. I haven't found anything like them in my few books.
Thanks much for your input on both these fungi!!
