| | | Amanita rubescens confirmation Hi folks
I'm fairly confident that this is The Blusher, although not wishing to eat it I would appreciate confirmation as it's the first time I've found this species.
All the vitals seem correct:
pink/red bruising to gills, flesh and stem where damaged
white spore print
grooved ring stem
Many thanks in advance
Regards

| | | Re: Amanita rubescens confirmation Bill,
As a relative fungus newbie myself, there's not a lot of species I can contribute to an ID discussion. But I do know the blusher, and, yes, that's it!
(Unless I'm wrong)

A good one to familirise yourself with bill, Amanita in general are impressive looking and do have a few strong key indicators that help you get close to an I'd of sorts.

Although I do not personally recommend that anyone eat any wild mushroom let me add that what has been stated in some threads that you have to parboil them and throw away the water is not true. You just have to cook them well.
The bit about parboiling and throwing out the water (twice according to some authorities) is apparently true of gyromitra esculenta (false morel) - which I genuinely do not recommend you eat! |

| | | Re: Amanita rubescens confirmation Thanks all for the prompt confirmation. For future reference, what does "well cooked" mean. Keep them on the heat for 5 minutes after they look done?

| | | Re: Amanita rubescens confirmation My understanding is as long as they have been thoroughly heated through - not raw or half cooked - they are fine. I've used them mixed with other mushrooms in various recipes, not paying particular attention, with no problem. In other words, you don't have to cook them to death, just cook them.
Disclaimer: I am not advocating that anyone eat any wild mushroom!
