| | | Russulas everywhere Is it the wet weather up here in Scotland that has brought the Russulas out. There were thousands of them everywhere in my local coniferous wood.

| | | Re: Russulas everywhere I presume you've had an influx of rain then Ron? It's bone dry here in the driest county in this country Funny that
However, it's getting a little cooler now and get a bit gloomy, so hopefully it'll rat it down for a week and we'll be in business. I'll race you to some A. pantherina if you're up for it. First one to get one wins nothing but Panther pride
DEAL?!
I don't fancy my chances and I've not seen one for about 17 years, and considering I'm 21, that's quite a while like |

It's been raining off and on virtually every day for a couple of weeks up here Nick, the Boletus edulis I posted in the Gallery wasn't there two days ago, they sure do shoot up.
I will take you up on the Pantherina bet
Ron

| | | Re: Russulas everywhere My God, Ron! I looked at your Cep picture, and am I jealous! Those beauties have been up long enough to be flattening out and yellowing, yet are untouched! In my woods, if I don't get them (and I love them!) the moment they break ground, Bambi will have them, and all I'm left with are a white hole in the ground and a few crumbs of edulis stipe. On one occasion in one of my regular Cep glens, I noticed an unusually symetrical bulge in the moss and collected a beautiful Cep even before the first hint appeared above ground. Take that, Bambi!
The deer go for all the amanitas, as well. The first few days they appear, they're untouched. Then suddenly they're discovered, and a whole glade is eaten down to the ground overnight. Including the muscaria - those must be some happy deer!
The russulas appear to be the province of squirrels or other smaller creatures, as they are regularly nibbled, but disappear in bits over several days, where as the b. edulis and all the amanitas are here today gone tomorrow.

| | | Re: Russulas everywhere Jim, I noticed that with another large group of edulis I had spotted last week. They were only a couple of inches high and were keeping some young muscarias company. I went back the next day and there were only stumps left

| | | Re: Russulas everywhere what gets me is how the can stand on one half chew/slobber all over the next and defecate over the ones behind. After being out competed by the deer for the two years since i finally found a cep ive shifted my search area closer to a conurbation and am yet to find any deer evidence or cep as it happens oh well you cant begrudge them. now being out competed by a local forging company is another matter not happy about that at all.
