| | | Amanita and Lactarius queries Hi all,
First one found yesterday on a field margin near various broadleaves, which I think is a soggy, slug-eaten Tawny grisette, Amanita fulva,
Secondly, earlier today I found a solitary large milkcap, approx 150mm across cap and 100mm tall, stipe sturdy, cylindrical approx 40mm diameter. All white (cap, flesh, gills and stipe) yellowing where damaged. No particular smell. Milk - white, unchanging on exposure to air. I tasted the milk, there was no noticeable taste but it made the tip of my tongue tingle and go slightly numb, like a mild local anaesthetic. No picture I'm afraid, maybe tomorrow, but any suggestions as to where to start looking for an ID.
It was growing by the edge of a stream in a oak grove.
Cheers

| | | Re: Amanita and Lactarius queries I reckon your Amanita is Amanita vaginata due to the lack of colour that's usually show in A. fulva. |

| | | Re: Amanita and Lactarius queries Hi Nick,
I was going by the pictures in my aged copy of Phillips which shows A. vaginata much darker than fulva, however looking at the cap edge in the second pic it does look lined rather than grooved.
As you can probably tell it was not the best weather for taking pictures (par for the course in Wales this "summer") so I didn't spend as much time over them as normal. There was one fruitbody in this spot last year and just one this year too, so I didn't want to pick it for better shots as it gives the impression of barely hanging on there.
Cheers

| | | Re: Amanita and Lactarius queries I am now thinking possibly L. vallereus for the milkcap, I will try to collect it tomorrow/today for a closer look. |

| | | Re: Amanita and Lactarius queries Does look like R. delica but I'm afraid there definately was milk
I had another look at what the slugs have left of it and the cap is quite smooth on top which makes my original guess seem unlikely. Think this is going to have to stay a Lactarius sp.

If the cap was dry I think you were right with vellereus if it was sticky it could be controversus.
