| | | Waxcaps Over the last couple of weeks I've been finding quite a lot of waxcaps at Malham Tarn - giving me a chance to have a go at this group for the first time. Some of them I'm still unsure about, some I'm pretty certain of and there's a few are dead certs! They're a very attractive group of fungi but I struggled a little at first with comparative levels of sliminess but altogether I think they make a very attractive set of specimens.
Any thoughts, corrections or confirmations much appreciated. STRUGGLING
1) No idea really?
Cap and stem both slimy, cells in gill trama less than 500µ, spores fairly large at 7.7-9.5µ x 4.7-6.0µ - not constricted. FAIRLY CONFIDENT
2) Crimson Waxcap - Hygrocybe punicea:
spores:
3) Oily Waxcap - Hygrocybe quieta
spores (constricted): PRETTY SURE
4) Scarlet Waxcap - Hygrocbe coccinea
5) Meadow Waxcap - Hygrocybe pratensis
6) Snowy Waxcap - Hygrocybe virginea DEAD CERTS - just to complete the set
7) Parrot Waxcap - Hygrocybe psittacina
8) Blackening Waxcap - Hygrocybe conica

I would agree with all your Identifications. The first one also looks like it could also be a Parrot Waxcap, The are very variable and the spores are the right size. Is there any green at the top of the stipe? this would clinch it for me.

exactly same opinion: Hygrocybe psittacina.
I wanted to post that this morning already, but the site didn't let me
best regards,

| | | Re: Waxcaps Thanks all - that's pretty unanimous and now you say it it does seem pretty like the other ones I've been seeing but without any real green in. It threw me completely at the time but probably explains why I couldn't key it out satisfactorily.
