| | | ID help appreciated I have these two varieties growing in my garden. I have been reading through my Collins GEM mushroom guide, but being a bit of a newbie to this, cant make up my mind as to what they are.
These like to grow next to our Sage and next to the Curry plants, not really sure what these are from my book:
and they leave fingers very dark brown/black
These are in the grass underneath conifer:
I figured they where field mushrooms, but my book said that the ring on these dissappears quickly, and these all have quite a big ring, even the bigger ones.
I checked to see that it wasnt the yellow staining mushroom, but cut in half teh stem didnt go noticeably yellow. But bruising the cap did give a yellow/brown colour. So not really sure.
Chopped in half to see if base would go yellow:
Bruised cap with fingers to see how yellow they go:
Apat from a few walks to id mushrooms I'm pretty new at this, so any help appreciated.
Cheers,

| | | Re: ID help appreciated Unfortunately the first one has seen better days making it difficult for positive ID.
With respect to the Agaricus another test as well as bruising, to narrow it down ,would be to smell it, does it smell mushroomy or of aniseed?

| | | Re: ID help appreciated Hi Gerry,
The Agaricus just smells mushroomy. My book said the Agaricus Xanthodermous would smell like ink, but all I can smell is a mushroomy smell. The bruising on the cap eventually went brown. But there isnt really any yellow in the cut stem.
The first one, I have only ever seen them in my garden in this state. But I was probably away when they first appeared. If I were to remove the ones there currently would this encourage new ones to grow?
Thanks,

Well I took the information provided and cross referenced against 12 possibilities and did not get a match for a positive ID against any of them. I would suggest that you examine another specimen if still available and see if you come up with the same. Have a close look at the stem and check to see if the base is bulbous, if it is it can narrow it down to 3 possibilities, also whether the base turns yellow on bruising.

Thanks for your assistance. Unfortunately I've been waiting for more to spring up as the existing ones deteriorated too much, but no such joy yet.
The base wasnt bulbous on any of them though.
In the meantime, I'm out and about trying to get more experience at id-ing.
Cheers,

The Agaricus is most likely A. xanthoderma | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
