| | | Re: A selection for ID...again!;-) For my money (what little there is of it) 2. looks more like a well-chewed boletus badius, bay bolete. But it's only guesswork from the one picture of the cap. |

| | | Re: A selection for ID...again!;-) Despite white rim round cap edge I would have gone for Bay Bolete too on the grounds of the dark yellow pores and dark rich shiny cap - but off just one photo its hard to say ........ take more pics - if there's plenty or they are older and 'done their job' photo cap then pic and turn over for underside view! Even then its only a poss by photo - so many things look alike or can be confusing! But enjoy finding things anyway Sunnydale! |

| | | Re: A selection for ID...again!;-) I've seen many a B. edulis in this state here in the Pine and Birch forests of Norfolk. That's far too large to be B. badius in my opinion Plus, the pores turn yellow with age, then subsequent rain would darken them to an ochre. |

| | | Re: A selection for ID...again!;-) As has been written, there's really no way to tell from just the top of the cap. A look at the stem should confirm or deny b. edulis. And, for me at least, the surest test for b. badius to to poke a finger into the pores. On the bay bolete the touched spot will turn blue within seconds.
As far as size, in my part of the north, b. badius is frequently as large (in cap diameter) as the largest of b. edulis. |

| | | Re: A selection for ID...again!;-) I'm aware that a shot of just the cap isn't going to bode well for an ID, but some just have the 'look'- Andreas and Mal were saying it a while back- Some just 'look' right and to me, this has that look of B. edulis. That's not a definite ID suggestion, just an observation |

| | | Re: A selection for ID...again!;-) And I know for sure my first look isn't always right. In my favorite b. edulis spot I've thought I'd spotted a beautiful cep just breaking ground, only to come away with a large, dark purple russula! |

I must admit, I've done it with stones, thinking they were button Agaricus or Ceps! | | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
