| | | Calvatia gigantea at last! Been wanting to find one of these ever since my Dad and brother found one on a walk I wasn't on.
Struck lucky today near Hertford and found loads of them. Only one small one in edible condition and unfortunately on slicing it open the flies had got there first... |

But seriously they are pretty amazing things, they look like they have landed from another planet and I have wanted to see them in real life since I was about 10. Was just a bit miffed about the maggoty one 'cause I already had the recipe book out and the frying pan on the hob.....

Laura  | it likes nutrient-encriched sites so (carefully!) keep an eye on nettle / elder dominated areas of hedges / woodland edges - not always the most attractive habitats
