| | | bolete for id confirmation please???... Hi Everyone,
After embarking on my new hobby just last weekend I haven't been able to find anything in good enough condition to identify until a chance encounter this morning. I have checked my keys and think it is a lucky find and is either a cep (b.edulis), dark cep (b.aerius) or oak bolete (b.appendiculatus). I found two specimens growing in grass two feet from a road underneath horse chestnut and sycamore (so think this rules out the oak bolete). the larger of the two is pictured here and is the diameter of a train ticket / credit card.
Worth noting is the very dark appearance of the tubes – deep yellow colour turning almost grey-black in places
can anyone please confirm for me what these are - any help would be appreciated as always.

| | | Re: bolete for id confirmation please???... Welcome to the wonderful world of Fungi. First the bad news I don't think it is any of the ones you suggested
But the good news is I think there is enough to go on to give you the correct id. The pores look red, the stem has a red network on it, where you have broken the cap there are signs of a change of colour to blue and finally there is a red line between the tubes and the flesh of the cap.
Boletus luridus.

| | | Re: bolete for id confirmation please???... thanks flaxton - after your post I have just done a couple more checks to verify your id. i cut the stem and it has turnd grey/blue as has the section of flesh i have cut out of the cap so i think this confirms your id. the only thing i'm dubious about is that luridus normally grows under beech, oak or lime and thesewer growing under conker and sycamore - anyone else have any opinions? thanks flaxton - rich |
