| | | 3 For ID Help Please All found today in a mainly Beech woodland; -
No.1 - Possibly Mycena haematopus?
Cap sizes about 15-20mm, stipe lengths about 90-100mm, growing direct from a fallen/rotting Beech trunk.
No.2 - A Milkcap (but I can't get beyond that )
Cap diameter about 70mm, stipe length about 80mm. Growing directly from soil immediately beside a stream under Beech. Very umbilicate cap.
No.3 - Large Russula's
Cap sizes about 10-11cm wide, Stipe height about 10cm. Growing direct from soil under Beech.
Gills not brittle but very flexible, becoming waxy after brushing with fingers.
Any help with ID's much appreciated.
Regards,
Mike. |

Your first photo shows almost all the classic identifying features of M haematopus. Rich coloured, dusted stem, the cap with darker centre and dentate edge and the gills turning darker where damaged. The only thing missing is the dark fluid which normally comes from the stem when it is damaged.
My only concern is one of the other photos showing a distinctly hairy stem something I have never seen before and a feature which is not mentioned in any of my books.
I am still sure you have haematopus.

| | | Re: 3 For ID Help Please Thanks Mal,
That was my concern too - The description of the white cottony fibres towards the base of the stem is described for M.galopus, but not mentioned for M.haematopus in any of my books.
However, the rest of the features - cap colour flesh/gills etc. do seem to fit better with M.haematopus. hence my original tentative suggestion.
Unfortunately, it wasn't until I got home that I found out about the additional identifier to be found by breaking the stipe to see whether dark red or whitish latex resulted.
Anyone got any thoughts on the Milkcap & Russula ?

Mike. |

Lactarius vietus fits well. Described as having a greyish brown, viscid cap with gills adnate to decurrent sometimes forked pale cream stem with a pale zone just below the gills. The milk should have turned grey/green after a while did you notice any change from white?

is this one close to your russula?
Russula parazurea maybe?
Cheers

Mal | Hi Mal,
The milk seemed to go a darker "off-white" after a few minutes, but I wouldn't have really called it grey. (certainly not green).
I don't know if this might be a relevant identifier, but the stipe was covered in fine greyish/black flecks. (can best be seen on the final photo when viewed at largest size).

Ken | May well be Ken, but there are so many similar looking Russulas, and then when variations in individual fruitbodies withing a given species are considered, I couldn't begin to hazard a guess. (I was hoping that the distinctive "goblet" like shapes might have been relevant ).

Mal | It doesn't look right to me for L. vietus (something about the size, shape and colours lacking lilaceous tones) and the cap also looks quite dry.
I'd have been thinking more along the lines of Lactarius fluens, which can be greyish-green on the cap, with a paler margin. The gills would spot reddish-brown where injured but there's not really any sign of this from the photo. | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
