| | | Opinions Sought!
Have been deliberating over this one for hours and just keep coming up with Boletus Porosporus or Xerocomus Porosporus, the books tell me this species is very rare so have my doubts. Can't match the distinctive stem with anything else.
Would welcome comments and opinions.
Found in woodland clearing near Birch.
Small group.
Cap dia.4cm
Stem ht.4.5cm dia.1cm
No distinctive odour.
Bruising bluish.

| | | Re: Opinions Sought! Why have doubts about what it is? Occasionally you do come across species which are considered rare or very rare. Last year my group came across something which was only the fourth confirmed record in Britain.
Another example is Boletus radicans, in Phillips' it is considered 'rare'. 2 years ago, I found 3 sites for it within a 2 mile radius of my house!

Mark | Good luck with this find Gerry.
Sounds interesting, do tell us more Mark.

Jenny | Pretty certain this is not Boletus chrysenteron as we came upon these on the the same field trip, the stem fibrils just do not compare.

Mark | Take your point Mark, but it is always nice to have a second opinion.

| | | Re: Opinions Sought! We were in the woodland bit across the road from Newtown Common, N. Hampshire. We were having our lunch close to a bit containing quite a bit of Alder. One of the members said "anyone know of a mycena that grows on Alder catkins" to which my reply was "Mycena rhenana" . I only knew this because I was reading through the mycena section of C&D a few days previously.
Compared the illustration in the book to a couple of found fruitbodies and it was a nigh-on match. One or two got sent off for confirmation but it was one of those species where the description and illustration matched perfectly, so we were positive it was that. Apparently it was found again there this year at a foray I couldn't make.
The pics I took of it were rubbish so I may go back there for a second attempt as it would be nice to have a half decent piccy of it.

Gerry | Very true, sometimes a species could be suggested what you have previously not thought about. I compared the pic to to the one in Phillips and it is a very close match. With everyone else posting all these piccies, I'm going to have to post a couple of mine - once I've looked at them to see if they're any good!
