| | | Re: Two fungo for ID, Russula?? Both Russula but if you're aiming to get these badboys ID'd in future, you'll need to include as much information as possible. Information listed below will help you to get a more accurate ID;
Taste test - nibble the edge of the gills, chew and then spit out. Taste is important with this genus. Nibbling is perfectly safe, just try not to swallow anything.
Gill test - Feel the gills. Some are waxy and flexible whereas others will be dry and very brittle. It's all relevant and needs to be included in your notes.
Peeling the cap cuticle - If you gently hold the edge of the cap and peel the part with the colour on towards the centre of the specimen, it'll stop peeling at a certain point. Some species will allow the cuticle to be peeled about a third of the distance between the pileus edge and the centre. Some species will allow a half. Some will allow you to remove the whole gelatinous cuticle, exposing the ice white flesh.
All of those factors are necessary (in the majority of cases) if you're keen on upping your chances of accurate ID.
Hope that helps.

| | | Re: Two fungo for ID, Russula?? Hello,
just from looking at the fotos and with no certainty to be correct, I would think of R. xyanoxantha for the first and R. queletii for the 2nd. This 2nd seems fairly sure to me.
best regards,
Andreas

Andreas | I'm sure that's happened to me before. Was I imagining it incorrectly? |
