| | | Grisette & Waxcap for ID Help Please Both found today: -
No.1
Growing in soil amongst Beeches. Cap size about 75mm, stipe height about 150mm. Cap was uniformly mid brown in colour.
I originally thought Amanita fulva, but having viewed on screen, the stipe & volva have orange tints. Is it possibly a rather dark capped Amanita crocea?
No.2
Growing in deep grass beside a moorland track.
I'm thinking these are waxcaps, but can't find anything similar in my books.
Cap diameters about 25mm, stipe heights about 80mm
Any thoughts on ID would be gratefully received.
Regards,
Mike.

if the subgenus Amanitopsis specimen at the top is not fulva - that cap colour is somewhat ambiguous - then I would be looking in the Amanita pachyvolvata / A. battarrae area - after that I'm out of my depth
that "waxcap" is no waxcap - looks like an Entoloma, with E. sericellum a strong candidate
but I'm really a "micro" guy and no little of these huge species
cheers
Chris

| | | Re: Grisette & Waxcap for ID Help Please Hello,
full agreement with Chris.
The Grisette is in my opinion a somewhat strange coloured A. fulva. The rusty coloured volva is typical for A. fulva and A. battarae, but never present in A. vaginata, A. crocea and A. pachyvolvata (o.k., some ochraceus spots may be present). For A. battarrae no sign of a zonate cap colouration is seen on the foto.
best regards,
Andreas

| | | Re: Grisette & Waxcap for ID Help Please can i jump in and check that i am right in thinking that these are photos of an amanita fulva which has a more typical colouring. its a small example growing on a sweet chestnut stump, the photos were taken 24hrs apart and are of the same fruit body. the stem in the mature shot has split which i've not seen before but its been very dry lately and it may have made it brittle.
almost a numerous as stink horns at the moment, or the common earth balls in the background.

The first photo is more 'classic' than the second. |
