| | | Agaricus for ID Found these growing in a troop of about 5 on the edge of a car park in the New Forest yseterday. Unfortunatley went back to them first thing this morning & they had been kicked over.
Can't find anything that matches exactly in Phillips or Jordan.
Cap - 9cm (largest)
Stem - 70-50 x 20mm
Smelled slightly of aniseed (but I'm not that good with smelling mushrooms!)
Close to Holly, Scots Pine, Douglas Fir, & a grass lawn. |

But, the smell has thrown me a bit, but then, as I say, I'm not that good with mushroom smells.
The other thing was the cap was quite scaly - more like a parasol - than the picture of A. augustus in the books. But then I looked at my photos & it starts to look more like the pics in the books?!
At least you thought of A.augustus too. |

| | | Re: Agaricus for ID The upturned specimen doesn't look in the best of health- dehydration will make the cap dry and scaly sometimes. The specimen in the ground looks spot on.
Your smell diagnosis is pretty accurate- I'd say A. augustus definitely smells of almond/aniseed.
Having said all of that, I'm still not 100% sure, but that's my best guess! |

| | | Re: Agaricus for ID Here's an example from last year of how the caps get a little scaly when dehydrated. Quite a size difference though! |

| | | Re: Agaricus for ID Hi there - hope you don't mind me chipping in, I'm only a beginner but your pics are good to help me practice too. I reckon it is A.Augustus - the smell is definitely right and it seems to prefer conifer woodland so would fit with the douglas fir and holly habitat. Also, the stems should have yellowed when damaged in the car park. Apparently the mushroom can grow to 25 cm!!! Rich |
