| | Discomycete on Acorn cup Hey guys,
Found this today buried in the undergrowth whilst digging for Cordyceps ophioglossoides ( ) and wondered what it was. It's not a Bisporella is it? It might even be an Asco, I'm unsure.
All help much appreciated,
Nick |

| | | Re: Discomycete on Acorn cup Hello Nick,
most probably a Hymenoscyphus species, but not fructigenus.
No chance for a name without detailed microscopic examination ...
best regards,
Andreas

| | | Re: Discomycete on Acorn cup Hello Nick,
if you do, please do your mounts in water, not in Melzer, congo red or anything else.
Have a look at the spores (form and size). There are two main group: One with ciborioiod spores, uneven-elliptical, the other with scutuloid spores, with one end more pointed then the other, like in H. scutula. Compare to the drawing in FoS, if you hav ethis.
Then have a look at the spore content, if there are oil dops inside. If yes, how many space do they need of the whole spore? neraly the whole spore is beset with drops, appr. half of it, or only very few (or no drops at all).
Very important also, whether the asci have at their base a clamp-like connection to the next cell. It is called crozier at the ascos, but looks nearly the same than clamps in basidios.
best regards,
Andreas

| | | Re: Discomycete on Acorn cup Thanks Andreas! That's great information.
If I'm honest, because I'm too lazy to buy any, I have no reagents or stains and mount most of my mycological samples in water. I seem to get on alright ok with this, until it gets serious at least.
I will order Congo Red, Cotton Blue and Melzers soon, but not for a bit
Thanks again and I will post back tomorrow! |
