| | | Stinkhorns - How long from egg to ... stink :-) Hello all, i found a stinkhorn in its egg stage and i would like to know if any of you folks on here know roughly how long it takes before the 'horn' begins to grow from the egg and at what rate?
By the way i think this site is awesome! |

| | | Re: Stinkhorns - How long from egg to ... stink :-) Hello,
within some hours. We had for exhibiions sometimes eggs (in a glas well closed!!) and they often developped over night to well smellable fruitbodies.
best regards,
Andreas

If you want to watch it more closely (but not too closely...) I think I remember someone on here saying you can transplant it to a more convenient location, and in will still develop.
Cheers, Nick. |

The egg stage can sometimes last a couple of weeks and it is only when they reach the state similar to the ones below that growth is more rapid.
Stinkhorn - Phallus Impudicus
Typically 4 hours from this stage
Dog Stinkhorn - Mutinus caninus
Typically 3 hours from first emerging. This was observed and photographed after 1 hour.

| | | Re: Stinkhorns - How long from egg to ... stink :-) Several Wabbers I know have monitored and documented this development in past years and come to the same conclusion as John. When you find an 'egg', which is attached to the substrate by a single mycelial thread, it is almost impossible to tell at what stage its at and emergence can be within hours or weeks (sometimes never; though I'm not sure why this should have been the case unless conditions or disturbance prevented maturing)
