| | | Tylopilus felleus ? in grass close to young oaks and conifers on sandy soil,
cap 7" across soft, smooth, stipe 3" ( the cap is more of a brown than the actual picture shows)
pores bruising a darker tint where handled, flesh in cap white, slowly turning the same colour as rhe pores when cut, flesh in stem dirty white,
faint chemical smell to cap flesh, taste like battery acid
Tylopilus felleus seems to fit the description, and i have not found anything else with pores of this colour, but as usual it could be something else
thanks ,

the taste was so bitter, i would think that battery acid would make a more palatable drink

best,
Andreas | well, it was about three hours ago that i tasted it, and although i have had a meal since then, i can still taste the *$%* thing
one thing for sure, if i find this one again, i will not be tasting it,
perhaps one or two bottles of that rather nice German beer ive got cooling in the fridge will help (or perhaps 3 or 4 )

| | | Re: Tylopilus felleus ? I remember being on a foray nearly 20 years ago in Yorkshire when a relatively experienced mycologist put three chunky ceps into his basket and gloated that he was going to eat the lot.
Some of us were very jealous that he had got there first but not a certain Chris Yeates, who gently pointed out the pink pores and suggested that the person was welcome to take them home but might regret it later.
That experienced mycologist was very embarassed and I doubt he mistook Tylopilus felleus for Boletus edulis again.
Wonder what ever happened to that Chris Yeates person. |

Brian. | Hello,
funny enough, I don't even taste the bitter taste of Tylopilus. Nor that of Hypholoma fasciculare or Cortinarius infractus, nor that of Spongiporus stypticus. May be my toung is trained from the German beer
But I have tasted Sarcodon scabrosus. Strange ....
best regards,
Andreas
