| | | Chanterelles for confirmation please. Hi found my first Chanterelles of the summer i hope! Went on a stroll in local woods and just as the light was fading spotted a group of yellow fungi. Picked these two, pretty definate they are the true Chanterelle but would really appreciate confirmation.
Thanks Mark

| | | Re: Chanterelles for confirmation please. Hello,
certainly your chantarelles were found in a broad leaf forest and not under conifers. If one wants to be exact, it is not the chantarel called Cantharellus cibarius, but a very close species called Cantharellus subpruinosus or formerly Cantharellus cibarius var. pallens. It differs in having a whitish pruinose cap surface when young, which makes the young and fresh fruitbodies look like Lactarius piperatus which often grows in direct vicinity. Also this Chanatrel from broadleaf forests are much stouter and usually bigger then the "normal" Chantarel from spruce or pine woods.
And if one want to be even more exact: It is not certain, if the Cantharellus subpruinosus in its original sense is the same than that what we in central Europe tent to name so, because C. subpruinosus should be one of those species which quickly becomes rusty maculated when handled or damaged, but our central european collections (usually) don't have this character or only after several hours ....
But - they are edible and delicious anyway, no matter how you name them
best regards,
Andreas
