| | brown roll rim? Hello all,
Lots of these around under birch/mixed woodland today - fairly peaty soil base, in short poor grassland.
All brown, rusty spore print, decurrent, fairly crowded, darkening stem - larger specimens around 8'' cap width and a mushroomy smell - it looks to me like brown roll rim, Paxillus involutus, but would appreciate some help and guidance if not.
I havent tasted it and dont intend to!
Cheers
Ken

| | | Re: brown roll rim? yes it is a Brown Roll Rim, If it was under Birch and looking at the size of your specimens I would think it would be Paxillus involutus. There are now some others but they are generally larger or under other trees.

| | | Re: brown roll rim? I came across a big group of these just over a week ago so it looks like they`re about at the moment. It was a first for me and thoughts of Lactarius or Clitocybe were going through my mind but no sign of milk ruled out the first and a good look through my books soon confirmed Paxillus involutus.

| | | Re: brown roll rim? because they're really boletes a quick check can be to see how easily the gills separate from the cap context in the way you can with 'true' boletes; also the gills bruise brown
but actually once or twice seen soon learnt

| | | Re: brown roll rim? Thanks for contributions everyone!
The older specimens, including the one I took away are developing a white mould on them. Not unusual, on taken specimens that arent dried properly, but this was on a few in the field too.
Cheers

| | | Re: brown roll rim? It is also worth remembering the P. involutus which is not growing with Betula which Ammonia turns the flesh just under the cap cuticle green rather than pink.
