Ugly / Beech Milkcap ? (ID Help Please)

Found yesterday near Beech (Fagus).

Cap sizes about 50mm diameter, overall heights similar.

I think they are possibly Ugly Milkcap - Lactarius turpis, but they also seem to have some of the characteristics of Beech Milkcap - Lactarius blennius.



Any thoughts on ID/confirmations/other, much appreciated.

You need your ammonia or potassium hydroxide to separate the two species. Lactarius turpis will turn purple with alkali.

In this case your specimens are Lactarius blennius.

I don't think you would need any chemicals in this instance, Mike

those zonate darker dots plus the association with Fagus would settle it for me

I agree. What I should have said was: "If you are having difficulty separating the two species, you can use ammonia or potassium hydroxide..." Once you get your eye in, it's usually easy to distinguish between the two.

I would not be too sure with the determination L. blennius, as the milk seem to dry brownish and the gillslook quite cream coloured. You should compare your find also with Lactarius fluens.
But surely it is one of these two species.

I don't think this is Lactarius fluens. My finds of this species rarely show the distinctly separate spotting to the zonation on the cap.
