| | | ID confirmation please Hi, I found these all growing on 1 stump that could be horsechestnut as that's the trees around it. One is Eyelash fungus , but what's the diff between
Scutellinia scutellata or Scutellinia umbrorum please? The others I don't know. Large white and a smaller brown rosette in bottom left corner of photo, and very large group of small, light brown ones.
The other, at a guess, possibly Giant polypore or maybe hen of the woods? was some yards away on grass.
Thanks for looking.

Zan | hi Zan
unfortunately when you get into the realms of ascomycete fungi like Scutellinia species it's a bit of a leap - S. scutellata is often included in popular fungus identification books which obviously tend towards the larger agarics and bracket fungi etc. - almost as a token gesture to an area which actually contains far more species than the macro-fungi; occasionally a second one (eg. S. umbrorum) might be mentioned
however around 25 Scutellinia species are recorded for the British Isles, and the distinctions involve microscopy - size, shape and ornamentation of the spores, and length of the hairs and the way they are 'rooted' into the fungus are the most important characters
the result of this is that Scutellinia scutellata has probably been seriously over-recorded by people unaware of the complexity of the situation and other species in this genus are probably lost in those records
if they are collected in good condition and dried (an easy enough exercise), they retain all the characters required for identification, so if you ever collect and dry material PM me and I will forward you my details - I am happy to look at them for people (can't always guarantee a name but I give it my best shot)
best wishes
Chris

Ken | it's not Abortiporus for certain, Ken - that's a much less substantial fungus - this is going to be a big tough bracket
young Meripilus maybe? - but only maybe?
Chris

| | | Re: ID confirmation please The fact that the brackets in the last shots are bruising dark brown to black with age or where damaged is characteristic of Meripilus giganteus.
The bracket in the third shot looks like Trametes gibbosa from the top but you'd need to see the underside to be sure. |

Here is the underside of white #3, does it confirm your diagnosis of T gibbosa.
More pics of the other to follow |

Chris | Thank you for the detailed info Chris, I'm always learning something from you guys. I've never collected any specimens but if it's still there next time I go I will try to get some. Sorry I didn't get this post before I returned last night or I could've got it then.
cheers
