| | | Boletus ID please Found this specimin in a broadleaf copse. Help with ID is most welcome!
The cap was chestnut brown, 14cm across and stood 12cm high. My initial thought was Boletus luridus. Can anyone confirm this please?
Thanks all.

The photos are good but in this case the best identifying feature is the covering of the stipe which you managed not to show
If it has a reticulated (net like) surface it would be luridus but if the stipe is smooth or punctate which is what I suspect then it is B. luridiformis.

| | | Re: Boletus ID please Hello,
the stipe pcitures unfortunately don't give much information, as the fruitbody is a little be aged
Judging from the cut, which shows nearly no trace of red in the stipe base, although the fruitbody is quite old, I would think that this is Boletus erythropus (no, I will not use the epithet luridiformis, at least not until a nomenclatural commitee will force me to - which will never happen because erythropus would be sanctioned over luridiformis).
best regards,
Andreas

| | | Re: Boletus ID please Thanks Andreas. A quick look on the internet and boletus erythropus seems to fit the bill quite well.
