| | | Small bolete for id please on a wet, but productive(30 species) visit to Clumber today, these were found growing in grass/moss among Heather, at edge of pine/birch scrubland area
cap size approx 50mm , stipe approx 25mm , no colour change when cut/bruised,
the stipe flesh was a very bright yellow, more than shown in picture, pores a rust red/brown colour, flesh in cap was similar to cap colour,
spore print brown,
the nearest i can get to is boletus piperatus (Chalciporus piperatus) , so any pointers in the right direction gratefully received,
thanks, Brian. |

A rather sad specimen but still showing the distinctive bright yellow flesh in the stipe and orange pores. Yes Chalciporus piperatus. (Peppery Bolete - did you taste it?)

Mal | Hi Mal, thanks for that, and yes i did taste it, but it did not taste of much, with perhaps a slight peppery taste, which could have been more to do with wishfull thinking than actual taste
it was very waterlogged and soggy specimen though, so was probably well diluted ,
is Chalciporus piperatus the current name for this one now, rather than B.pieratus ?
thanks, Brian. |

| | | Re: Small bolete for id please i managed to get a pic of the spores from this one, but they dont seem to fit the description given in my books, they are described as "Spores elliptic, smooth, pale yellow "
the ones from my samle look to be round warty/spiky and not at all smooth, while the colour is more orange looking(but that is most likely the effect from the microscope)
any suggestions ? or am i not getting the correct view of these down the scope ?

That's not a bad picture of the spores but how can I put this delicately they are not the ones from the specimen shown in the picture . The spores you have are probably from a Russula or a Lactarius. They may have been on the slide or in the liquid you used for the slide but they are certainly not from a Bolete of any sort.

Mal | Mal, i think you have hit the nail on the head with that
i did have a lactarius quietus that i took a sample of a week ago, but i thought i had thrown that slide out, but it would seem i have got rid of the wrong slide ( my desk top is in a bit of a jumble at the moment )
i still have the Chalciporus drying , so i will try and get another sample on a new slide later tonight,
i shall have to find a way of labelling the slides to prevent this happening again, and learn to work in a tidier manner
thanks,
