| | | Polypore for ID very common no doubt, from a fallen birch (?)
fairly soft, strong mushroomy smell |

| | | Re: Polypore for ID The usual polypore on Birch is Piptoporus betulinus but this looks more like Hapalopilus nidulans to me. Was the top surface soft at well?

Mal | My thoughts exactly Mal, and they only occured to me because you have previously indentified one of my finds as Hapalopilus nidulans |

| | | Re: Polypore for ID I gave them a good prod, they seem pretty much the same on both sides, fairly spongy; one of them has dried out a bit more, I sense these will go old and tough if not as fresh and young (inspired by the rain I guess) as these were. |

| | | Re: Polypore for ID I don't know how long the test would be viable but if you have any KOH a drop on the surface may still produce the result shown in the A-Z and prove conclusively the identification. http://www.wildaboutbritain.co.uk/si...lans%20(4).JPG

| | | Re: Polypore for ID You can use Caustic Soda (NaOH .. Sodium Hydroxide). Sold in pellet form at most DIY stores.
It is very soluble and liberates heat on adding water. If making your own 10% solution, remember it is a strong alkaline solution and stir well whilst adding water.
