| | | Possibly Orange Grisette - Amanita crocea? Found today, a partially slug eaten solitary specimen, about 150mm tall, with a cap diameter of about 80-90mm.
Unfortunately no gill shot. (As I forgot to take the photo. )
Growing directly in soil, below Birch & Beech Trees.
Best guesstimate from comparing photos seems to be Amanita crocea, but would appreciate confirmation/other if possible.
Regards,
Mike.

| | | Re: Possibly Orange Grisette - Amanita crocea? PS - Just in case it may assist an ID. There are European Larch trees to one side of the steep bank on which this was found, and many of the twigs/needles collect hereabouts. (visible in photos). |

No fair | judging by the amount and quality of Mikes recent finds, he has a better patch than Clumber at the moment (Clumber has been a little slow of late, but things just starting to pick up now )
Maybe he should be organising a W.A.B Lancashire foray ?

Brian. | Sounds like a plan
I've not checked my patch, but a saunter today should come up trumps if Norfolk is anything like everywhere else in the UK! |

| | | Re: Possibly Orange Grisette - Amanita crocea? Thanks for the confirmation guys, - another new one for me.
Lancashire isn't noted for it's woodlands, and what we have around these parts tend to be fairly small isolated woods, some being little more than copse's. But there are quite a lot of them.
My "patch" is generally any of the small local woodlands & nature reserves within about a 20 mile radius from home. I tend to visit these on a random basis depending on weather, how long since last visit, etc. etc., and sometimes I might go to two, or occasionally even three locations in one day. (So what's posted on WAB might have been found over some considerable distances).
Regular haunts include: -
Cuerden Valley Park near Bamber Bridge Preston.
Crosshill & Salthill Quarries, Clitheroe.
Longworth Clough near Bolton.
Pleasington Old Hall Nature Reserve, Blackburn.
Spring Wood near Whalley.
Sunnyhurst Wood, Darwen.
Mere Sands Wood near Rufford.
(Occasionally) Warton Crag near Carnforth.
Regards my patch being productive, I don't really think that any single place is particularly productive. I'm generally seeing a couple of new ones at each location/visit - but that's probably more to do with the fact that I only started looking for fungi last autumn.
Also, of late, the fungi have had to be really searched for, rather than just being there alongside the paths for all to see. This has actually forced the adoption of a slower, perhaps more productive approach, as I'm probably seeing a lot of things that might previously have been missed.
As far as a Lancashire WAB foray goes, well, it would definitely be a good chance to meet fellow fungi fans. However, seeing as my foraying consists of just wandering slowly around at any given location, not knowing whether I'll find anything or not, I wouldn't like to guarantee that you might not go away from such a foray thinking Lancashire had suddenly become a fungi free zone.
Regards,
Mike. | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
