| | | Grassland fungi season again .... Yipee, first Hygrocybe of the season ... how about this beauty to get the season off to a great start? ... I'm pretty sure this is H intermedia, though they have always been a bit paler, more orange less red than this one, and a bit shaggier. Though this was receiving the brylcreem treatment of the heavy rain which was falling at the time.
And if that wasn't good enough, have a look middle left of the second picture. Sheep's doings? Panaeolus? No, just inches from the Hygrocybe a blue Entoloma ....
Actually that was just the start of the grassland and woodland fungi that are now showing ... there is a lot of stuff coming through, and in quantity - puffballs, Psathyrella, Marasmius, Agaricus, as well as masses of Panaeolus, Mycenas of all sorts, a Leccinum, another (different) Inocybe, something that might be a Limacella or maybe Amanita . I've gathered nearly 30 species today, on top of the 16 or so I found in the same area two days ago .. and I didn't even get to cover half of the area I was intending to. Had to rush back through two fields that were full of stuff which I couldn't stop for, was already late ...

I looked for Hygrocybe virginea today on a raised bog where I had it last year but there was no sign |

I had H. persistens, H. conica and H. psittacina already |

a blue Entoloma such as the one Melanie has found is more of a curse than a blessing in my experience (unless you're using the popular books - in which case it's one of two or three species )
just because it's big doesn't necessarily make it any easier to name correctly (just easier to spot in the first place) give me fungi you can put a name to unambiguously rather than these characterless monsters . . . .
only joking kids! (it's good for morale)

| But the spring and autumn bird migrations periods are exciting times though .... Quote:

| These monsters are full of character (and beautiful too) ... where is your sense of challenge?
