| | | Re: White asco on ash at Anston Stones Wood But was it definitely growing on an ash twig? Or could it have been on something else. The Basidiomycota Checklist says Calyptella capula can grow on dead twigs of woody shrubs, as well as its more usual habitat of herbaceous plants. |

Definitely a tree twig rather than herb .. harebell. In an area of much debris but Ash prominent. Maybe Les can add more in this respect.
Yes, basidiomycete and not asco … Oops
I have the sample, so could investigate further using the scope.

take it you were down by my dads bridge then | Hi Capt
We were investigating the area between the railway and the stream, and between the footbridge over the stream and the railway arch at the A57 end of the wood. Our specimen was by a recently fallen Ash tree, which had also brought down branches from nearby trees, including Lime (I am also searching for the Large Leaved Lime, out of interest).
The area below the cave is not producing anything at the moment, but our records indicate that August onwards is usually productive, especially with Myxos.
I take it that your reference to your dad's bridge is the footbridge over the stream, as the railway bridges are of the Victorian period (and wonderfully constructed from dark engineering bricks). I have never heard of the footbridge being asigned a name, but would be interested in hearing of when it was built, and why, and of course your dad's association with it.

| | | Re: White asco on ash at Anston Stones Wood i call it my dads bridge because he built it when he was 15 years old. his first proper job. not sure if it's the current incarnation of the bridge, as if so this would make it 50 years old.
i'd almost forgotten this but it happened to crop up in conversation on saturday

A photo of the bridge, with myself and Duke of York standing on it, was posted on WAB a couple of years ago, but I can't locate it now. I will see if I can find a copy (it was taken by my daughter, JennyWrenny).

PS Sorry for taking the thread off topic.
