The stipe is lemon yellow at the top and punctate over the full length. Your specimen looks to have a striate stipe without the "dots".
The lack of colour change with ammonia probably rules out B. subtomentosus and I would suggest B pruinatus.

across | I would agree with you that this is not Boletus impolitus for all of the reasons that you suggest. I would also like to add that it most likely to be found associating with Quercus. As for what this actually is, is another matter that needs more details. It is Xerocomus I believe but you really need up to date lit. as this section is evolving all the time.

Ps I have a new key for Xerocomus so PM me and I will send it across | Hi Mal
The smell at the stipe base is definitely very strong ... maybe the squirrel needs to visit the dentist . The flesh in the cap is very pale, when freshly cut, and only begins to yellow if exposed to the air for over a day, which was one reason I ruled out B pruinatus. The junction between the pores and cap flesh has a distinct rusty line, and the junction between the flesh and cap cuticle similar. The nearest trees are birch and hawthorn ... oak is a bit further away, and probably within squirrel fetching distance, and no beech or spruce for quite some distance ... my guess is that they were growing very close to where I found them, so associated with either birch or hawthorn. I'll see if any more appear there, try to get there before Mr Squirrel ... That particular spot grows a few Boletes, (one I failed to identify a few weeks ago), it was too slug and squirrel eaten, so if I'm lucky he might be diverted by something bigger and tastier, and leave these alone .... he likes Russulas, and he's welcome to those ... saves me the bother trying to id them, I'm actually very pleased when I find that the gills have all been eaten ....
I know the Europeans divide the Boletales up differently from us ... Funga Nordica which is pretty recent has B/X impolitus in the Xerocomus section ...
Thanks for the key....
Melanie
P.S. Now where did I put that Psathyrella ....
