| | | Leccinum scabrum? Found this one on its own under some birch at the side of the canal. At first I thought it might be variicolor as the cap colour seemed rather grey for scabrum (looks more brown in photos than to the eye). On cutting it open I can definitely rule out variicolor, so I think it must be scabrum after all.   
Nice to see something interesting - I seem to have seen so few fungi in the last couple of months.
The new pic upload buttons do make life a lot easier.

I think from the photos it is a textbook L. scabrum. Tawny cap, dark squamules especially towards the base, little or no colour change and growing with birch.
