| | | two yellow(ish) jobbies for id please this one was found in short grass/clover , about an inch across the cap,
with no unusual smell to it, ive gone round in the usual circles with this one, and got nowhere,
this second one was growing in soil/woody debris at the base of a fallen log,
i think it could be a Pluteus sp, possibly chrysophaeus, it has a faint mushroomy smell to it ,
the newly emerging ones look quite differnt on the caps, so im not sure if these are the same species ??
any suggestions very welcome,
Brian. |

thanks for that, i had considered Bolbitus, but according to my phillips, it grows on woodchips/straw or manured grassland, none of which fits where this one was found, but fungi dont seem to stick to the rules

| | | Re: two yellow(ish) jobbies for id please Try Agrocybe for the first one ... I found Agrocybe pediades just two days ago in three different sheep pasture fields (ok the fields were almost next to each other though). Looks very like the one you have found.
Melanie
BTW I went round and round in circles on that one too, took me ages to establish genus. Didn't do a very good check of the cap, squashed it sideways and didn't recognise it had a hymeniform cap on first go .... having eliminated all the others that didn't have a hymeniform cap as they didn't quite match the othe micro details, I then did a second more careful squash .. and hey presto ... Eventually I found the genus and species with all-matching micro details ....

and the micro details: quite distinctive cheilocystidia spores with thick walls and obvious pores
cheers

unfortunately, i will not be able to check the microscopic details as i lost my specimens, i had them all in seperate little paper bags,(a first for me!) but when i got back to the car i put them in the boot lid while i changed my boots and stowed the camera bag, and yes, i drove off forgetting the bags were still on the boot lid, it was only when i got home i realised what i had done
so it will have to be , Agrocybe sp -- probably
many thanks,

Melanie | your microscope skills far exceed mine Melanie !!
what equipment are you using to get such clear pics of the spores etc ?
no matter how i fiddle with mine i cant seem to get such clear, sharp images as yours, (although things do seem to be getting better

Brian. | At least you safely stowed away your boots and camera ....
I'm using a Zenith Ultra 400L microscope, nothing flash but seems to do the job quite well (though I should have got the next model up with the 100x oil immersion capacity), together with the 1.3mp down the scope camera from Brunel Micros. Remember to keep those coverslips clean ... sometimes I'm wondering why I can't see much and then realise there is a film of water over the top, or very mucky finger prints, or a bit of squashed fungus has got onto the lens .... Also try adjusting the diaphragm aperture. I know Chris has mentioned in the past certain things to check and adjust to get the best out of the microscope.

| | | Re: two yellow(ish) jobbies for id please Agrocybe pediades was on version 1 of the Red Data list as vulnerable, I noticed. Yet it is apparently common on mainland Europe. Is this another of those that just doesn't get recorded in the UK? It did lead me a merry dance, but once seen and identified it will now probably not be forgotten by me ... It does have the attitude of a little brown job, despite being yellow ....

Melanie | probably under recorded, due to people like me not knowing what they have found
