| | | Small red fungi for ID please I don't even know where to start when it comes to identifying fungi, but I'd be very interested to know what the one below is.......maybe an inch or so in height (2-3cm), but that's very approximate.
There was a small group of them growing in a rocky field at the edge of mainly conifer woodland, photo taken a couple of days ago.
Thanks in advance! |

| | | Re: Small red fungi for ID please Hello,
the cap surface being not smooth, but beset with small scales (lloks like granules on your foto) and the color and the size leeds to the not uncommon Hygrocybe miniata. Not 100% sure, but I don't think there are better arguments for another species.
best regards,
Andreas

| | | Re: Small red fungi for ID please Hi Jenny,
Possibly look in the direction of Hygrocybe miniata, H. coccinea, H. helobia.
It does look similar to this one that I found last year, although as Chris says there are a few possibles.
Regards,
Mike. |

| | | Re: Small red fungi for ID please Hi Jenny,
Bit early for hygrocybes?
But still, Miniata is top contender at that size, with cap scurfiness a clear pointer.
I went through this last year and as Mike says, his image and one I have are right with yours as the same, including gills.
No doubt others will say you cant be sure , but I think thats right as H Miniata.
Cheers
Ken

My favourites!
The torrential rain over recent weeks, plus sun on occasion seems to have caused a rash of fungi - my veg patch (in partial shade)has nearly as much in fungi as onions and peas.................but edible? Hmmmm.
Cheers

Interestingly I found a picture on the internet of Rickenella fibula var pseudocantharellus looking very like Hygrocybe cantharellus.
